Gabriela Lena Frank Weaves Spell with Hilos
If you're looking for a fresh compositional voice (especially if you like chamber music), then I highly recommend giving Hilos a listen.
Glazunov Complete Concertos Completely Enjoyable
For those of us who are familiar with Glazunov, it's instructive to hear these works one right after the other. For not familiar with this Russian master, this disc is a great place to start.
Understanding Minimalism
Minimalism has a different aesthetic, perhaps, than older tonal music, but it's one that works. Both visually and audibly!
Rapturous Classical Music
So what would be appropriate classical music for the Rapture and the coming Apocalypse?
Julia Lezhneva - a fresh, new voice
Lezhneva is a true soprano. She has first-class technique and a winning style that serves her well in this repertoire.
Classical Top 40 -- Set in stone, or sand?
Even though everyone has an idea of what makes up the accepted canon of classical music, each person has a slightly different list.
#OperaPlot 2011 -- The Denouement
So how did I do? Well, I was one of the runners-up again this year.
Charles Wuorinen Chamber Music
The musicians on this release, the Brentano String Quartet, pianist Peter Serkin and violist Lois Martin, all play with authority and conviction. They’ve internalized this music and present it with expressiveness and warmth.
Suk's Fairy Tale has Happy Ending, Beginning, and Middle
Particularly striking is how well-recorded this release is. Suk’s music is as much about orchestral coloration as it is about structure. The Buffalo Philharmonic has a warm, inviting sound that really adds to the performance of these works.
