Villa-Lobos War and Victory Symphonies - Compelling Music
Completed in 1919, these symphonies play against expectations. First, the works have very little of the folk elements Villa-Lobos scores are known for. Second, although commemorating victory, the symphonies avoid bombastic and heroic gestures.
Ann Shaffer - 30 years of "A Time for Singing"
Ann Shaffer, host of A Time for Singing marked her 30th anniversary as a WTJU volunteer announcer on March 30, 2013.
Beethoven Violin Sonatas Lively and Expressive
Both Govatos and Barone play with precision, which makes them well-matched. These are very clean performances. And energy isn't sacrificed for accuracy either.
Constantine Orbelian, pianist
Orbelian is a talented conductor, and as these recordings show, he's a gifted pianist as well. A welcome addition to the Moscow Chamber Orchestra's extensive catalog of recordings.
Muzio Clementi: Gradus ad Parnassum, Vol. 4 - Delightful
Marangoni plays with alacrity and a light touch, making these difficult exercises sound effortless. And more importantly, he makes them sound musical.
Rzewski - The People United Will Never Be Defeated!
"United" is all about the journey. And it's one that's well worth the time invested.
Brundibar - Music by Theresienstadt Composers
The Nash Ensemble plays with precision and energy. All four works are compositions of substance that deserve to be heard on their own merits.
Billband - Towards Daybreak
Listening from start to finish provides a complete aesthetic experience and one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
