Vagn Holmboe Concertos -- Neo-classical richness
While this release is available as a download, I highly recommend the SACD version -- especially if you have an SACD player. These performances were lovingly recorded by DaCapo, and the fullness of the sound adds an extra dimension to these appealing works.
Fernando Lopes-Graça Piano Concertos: Portuguese Gold
Fernando Lopes-Graça (1906-1994) was passionate about the folk music of his native Portugal. And like his contemporary Bela Bartok, he collected it, studied it, absorbed it, and synthesized it into his own music.
Magnus Lindberg and the New York Philharmonic
The works, the performances, and the recording itself is all top-notch. A triumph all the way around.
Elliot Carter - Volume 9 continues strong series
This is an album that rewards careful listening, and is an important addition to Elliot Carter's musical legacy.
Michael Dougherty Mount Rushmore - Monumental Music
Three distinctively American works, by an American composer with a distinctive voice, performed by an American ensemble.
Del Sol String Quartet - Zia
Although the styles on this release are wide-ranging, the Del Sol handles it all with ease.
Dan Visconti: Lonesome Road - Music for Explorers
If you're tired of the same old/same old classical repertoire, and are looking for something other than dry academic exercises, "Lonesome Roads" will renew your faith in classical music's contemporary relevance.
Snapshots - Peter Knell miniatures shine in new collection
Markus Pawlik's technique is flawless. His clean articulation at times makes the music sparkle.
Arabella Steinbacher: Bruch/Korngold Violin Concertos
Steinbacher's art is quietly attractive, and one that can make even these overly-familiar works sound fresh.
