The Last Rose: Mysterious Music on Silent Instruments Reborn
Even if you have a large collection of early music, you should add "The Last Rose" to your collection. And if you're starting your exploration of this genre, "The Last Rose" is a great choice as well.
Arte Minima Presents Renaissance Music from Portugal
It's a sound I've not heard before. And it's music I've not heard before. So, win-win for me.
Orpheus Returns with John Dunstable
There is so little John Dunstable available, it’s great to have this back in print. And it’s now a historic recording in its own right.
Album for Lute a Rare Find
A fascinating collection, and one I'm glad I heard.
Gregoire Brayssing: Complete Music for Renaissance Guitar
This is a recording of incredibly obscure music by an unknown composer for an esoteric instrument. None of that matters. We have the music.
Fretwork Delivers with Matthew Locke's Little Consort
As performed by Fretwork, these suites have a distinctly English character. And that's part of their charm. I'm sorry I missed volume one. I'll add that to my want list. Don't miss this one.
A Byzantine Emperor at King Henry’s Court: Christmas, 1400 London
This is an album of great beauty and great serenity. Those are two qualities both the Latin and Eastern Orthodox hymns have in common.
Antwerp Requiem ca. 1650 -- Music by Phillipus van Steelant
I had never heard of Phillipus van Steelant before, much less his music. This release was a fine introduction.
Machaut - Remede de Fortune new triumph for Blue Heron
Blue Heron is still one of the finest vocal ensembles around, and they didn't disappoint. The music was sung with pure, clear tones of incredible expressive beauty. Les Délices provided subtle accompaniment, supporting the vocalists without detracting from them.
