WorldView Episode 70: Finale (For Now…)

Welcome to the 70th episode of WorldView! After 76 weeks on the air, the show is taking a break. This will be the final new episode recorded in 2023, but rebroadcasts of old episodes will continue to air during normal scheduled hours. Please continue to tune in to hear eclectic classical music from everywhere in the world except Western Europe.

This week’s show features several artists heard in early episodes of this show: Amy Beach (episode 3), Rebecca Clarke (episode 16), Ignacy Jan Paderewski (episode 13), and Agustín Barrios (episode 1). Agustín Pío Barrios — also called Agustín Barrios Mangoré — was born in Southern Paraguay in May of 1885, the son of artistic parents. He began playing the guitar and exploring music as a young adult, and started attending the Colegio Nacional de Asunción (National College of Asunción) at age fifteen. In addition to excelling in music, Barrios worked as a graphic artist and studied in the mathematics and literature departments. After leaving university, he began routinely composing and recording music for the guitar.

Throughout his life, Barrios wrote over 100 original works, and arranged over 200 more. Many of his pieces are in the romantic style. This episode features Barrios’s “Un sueño en la floresta”, or “A dream in the forest”. The work was completed in 1918, and is performed here by guitarist Pablo Villegas. Enjoy!
